The Umpqua Valley’s first settlers, the Rev. JA Cornwell family, built a cabin near present day Oakland in 1846. They were traveling the Applegate Trail with their original destination the Willamette Valley, when exhaustion and severe winter weather forced them to stop. Other settlers soon followed and by 1852 the town had a grist mill and a store. When the railroad was built through the area in the early 1870’s, residents moved the wooden buildings of the town one mile southwest to be next to the railroad. Oakland was the first city to be placed on the state's historic register, in May 1968. The city's two-block business district consists of the original brick buildings built in the 1880s and 1890s. Stearns Hardware has been in continuous operation since 1887.
